I was taking lessons for about two years with Yalla Araby in Bern. I wanted to learn the Arabic language because of the magic of its calligraphy and because I wanted to understand more about the Arabic culture. In order to do so, one must start to learn the language of a culture, however you also need to have an idea about the ways of life, history, food, music, arts and last but not least about the things “between the lines”. In this regard, the lessons were just perfect, because the teacher didn’t only explain the alphabet to me, the letters and the grammar, but we also had a lot of conversations about the Egyptian culture, history and current events in the Arabic countries. All this made me better understand the different way of expressing yourself in Arabic, the metaphoric terms, etc.I appreciated the teacher’s flexibility in the lessons. He kept on teaching me the basics, focusing on the curriculum, but was also open when I was keen to jump into something that was actually not for beginners.
